Discussion of the Week: Do Music Reviews Matter To You?

I don't know bout y'all...But personally, I don't let music reviews determine whether or not I listen to an album. I know, I know....."But Tanya, you WRITE music reviews"......and in doing so, I try to convey how I felt while listening to an artist's work. Your reading what was going through my mind as I listened to a particular album. I am all about keeping an open mind, and when I think something is good, obviously, I want other people to hear it to.....When I don't think something is good, I'll be the first to tell you so....and why. But that being said, I encourage listeners to keep an open mind. Listen to the album yourself, and decide whether or not it tickles your musical fancy. 

A perfect example of this was when Yeezus came out last year. I was intrigued to listen because 2 of my good friends had completely opposing opinions about the album. One thought that it was wonderfully creative, and the other thought that it was just plain trash.....which prompted me to take a listen for myself. Listening to that album sparked a blog post that was literally written on the train ride home has the album was playing. You can view it here. The point is that I still gave the album a chance, and made an informed decision from there.
