Happy 25….You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby!

1987- What a great year for music! I just can’t believe that year was 25 yearsago. I was only 4 years old, but I fondly remember listening to some really good music that year. These albums were innovating, groundbreaking, and just downright fun to listen to. So today, we salute you and say “Happy 25th b-day,” you’re now a quarter of a century old! Dayum!!!

1)    Appetite for Destruction- Guns N’ Roses

Come on, who doesn’t remember “Welcome to The Jungle.” To this day, it probably still blasts through your speakers, admit it! But my personal favorite is this gem, “Sweet Child O’ Mine”

2)    The Joshua Tree- U2

Remember the video for “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” Nothing but them and their instruments walking down the Las Vegas strip, playing. Even after 25 years, I can still honestly say "Wow, what a great song!" Unfortunately, YouTube would not let me upload the actual video for some reason, so here are just the lyrics. Grrrr......

3)    Faith- George Michael

Oh Lawd! This was all you heard on MTV back in ’87. On the hour, every hour, they were playing this video. This is back in the days, when they were trying to market George Michael as a sex symbol to women, so his videos were in heavy rotation. Little did they know at the time……..

4)    Introducing the Hardline According to Terrence Trent D’arby- Duh?

Remember this cat! He had a hit album, was popular for maybe 2 good years; that is until he publicly said that he thought that he was “better than Michael Jackson.” Come on, it’s the King of Pop in 1987- a time when he could do no wrong in the eyes of most. You just didn’t say stuff like that back then if you still wanted to have a career.

5)    Bad- Michael Jackson

Speaking of Michael, this was the follow-up to what is still today regarded as the biggest-selling album in the world. No pressure...Everyone and their mother was awaiting this album. And it did not disappoint. Almost every song was a single, and a hit single, nonetheless. However to Michael, this album was a disappointment because it did not “top” the success of “Thriller.” At 30 million copes sold- a number that most of these artists out here today could only dream of selling- it was still not good enough to Michael, the ultimate perfectionist. What???

6)    Hysteria- Def Leppard

Oh yeah, Arena Rock at its finest. Every video was concert footage. Every song sounded the same, but that’s ok though, cause they had a specific sound, and it worked for them. “Pour Some Sugar on Me” was HUGE that year, and pretty much dominated the airwaves.

Well, there you have it- 1987 at its finest. My, how 25 years have passed so quickly. The beautiful thing is that none of these albums sound anywhere close to being dated. In fact, they sound as new as they did on the day we all 1st heard them

Until next time…….
